Industry updates
by Ken Vitty, CRL, CFL, CFI

By the 2007 model year, most vehicle's sold in the North American market will be on the C.A.N. computer system.  this is part of the organized WDS "World Diagnostic System" venture. we will keep you posted with updates.  Basically, this system will have smaller computers for various functions that connect to the main C.A.N computer.  This system is in use in Europe at this time.  However, THE MAJORITY OF THE NORTH AMERICAN VEHICLE'S WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH THIS SYSTEM BY THE 2004 MODEL YEAR.  One vehicle for instance that is C.A.N. equipped on is the 2004 Ford F150.

Some of the 2004+ vehicle's will not have a door lock or handle, they will have a secreted membrane.

The Infiniti, FX 45, uses remote start, an encrypted card and needs a transmitter to continue to run.  This is an anti-carjacking feature.  If the car is car jacked, and the thief drives away, and if the "E" card is in the pocket of the original driver the car slows down and stops a few blocks away.  I am on top of this new feature and will keep the industry posted.

The new Cadillac's will not have a door handle.  they also use a secreted membrane.

If a late model Mazda has a black in color plastic ignition lock faceplate, the vehicle has a transponder system.

The new model first time introduced Cadillac XLR, is actually built on a Corvette frame.  It is being built in the Corvette plant in Kentucky.  It will look similar the the 2005 Corvette.  This car will ONLY have two locks.  A KEY IS OPTIONAL.  The OEM remote keyless entry FOB also has a transponder built into it.  This vehicle will have NO ignition lock.  The vehicle will not have a door lock, only a membrane, it will have a glove box and hidden rear lock, located secreted in the left rear bumper cover corner under a flap.

In order for the "E" card to work, it must be in the proximity of the doors or steering column.  There is a switch in the glove box to convert to a valet function.  There is a fuel well door lever and a left front door lever secreted on the left rear trunk wall.  The rear bumper lock has a clutch built into it that will deter forced rotation.

The new name for the systems cards, AND YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST IS THE "PROXIMITY CARDS".

The new 2004 Scion will not have a transponder system.

The new Chrysler Cross Fire will have a high security cut key and lock system.

The Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagens will not have mechanical linkage in their door cavities, they are electrical linkage systems.

Transponder detectors cannot detect many of the newer vehicle transponder systems.  New devices are on the way and are only available to locksmiths and dealers.

ALSO:  The locksmith bill is now LAW.  If you work on a LOCK or KEY in any way, shape or form, YOU MUST HAVE A LOCKSMITH LICENSE.  A test is required plus proof of established performance as a locksmith is required.  KEEP IN MIND IF YOU WORK WITH LOCKS IN ANYWAY, YOU MUST HAVE A LOCKSMITH LICENSE IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY.

There are many changes in the works.  I will keep you posted as to the changes as I or my employees attend classes that share the automotive updates in transponder systems.
