To ensure the proper and safe deliver of all evidence and debris submitted for examination, the following procedures should be closely followed:
We do not test oil filters or oil samples. However we do use an independent
lab for this service.
The cost of an oil analysis is nominal fee.
BURNED VEHICLE DEBRIS
35 mm photos of the vehicle must accompany the debris submitted. The photos should include all four sides of the exterior, left front and right front door handle and lock areas, the front and rear door window weather stripping area, the door cavities and door linkage system and interior door panel area. There are many ways to enter a vehicle other than the use of the primary or accessory key and we can advise you whether the theft portion of the evaluation is worth pursuing or not.
The burned and carbonaceous debris in the door cavities can be collected and packaged separately with the bag tagged with the door location from which the evidence has been collected. The debris under the steering column can be collected and bagged and packaged separately from the door cavity debris.
Photos of the interior should also be enclosed. A photo from the front, rear and sides including the dashboard area. Photo of the steering wheel, steering column and ignition lock (if still attached to column) should also be included.

Please Note: It is not necessary to remove and ship the steering column from a totally burned vehicle if the vehicle is of Japanese manufacture, or if the steering wheel has fallen from the steering column as a result of the fire.
Warning:
There are those who warn about not collecting the debris and forwarding it for analysis. It is best explained that the section of the carpet under the steering column may be cut out, not folded and shipped to us and we will perform the layering techniques.
UNBURNED VEHICLES:
35
mm photos of the vehicle must be included with the evidence submitted for
examination. Particular attention must be taken to photograph the
door handle and lock areas, door window trim, weather stripping, roof panel over
the door window frames and frames and the rear deck lid.
Photographs of various angles of the steering column and ignition lock and housing must be taken as it appears at the time that you are taking the photographs. Do not place any object in the keyways of any of the locks submitted for evaluation. Photograph the automatic transmission select lever (if so equipped) and note the position of the lever at the time you first examine the vehicle.
NOTE: If a steering column needs to be removed, it is advisable to have a mechanic or body shop mechanic remove the column. Photograph the column and ignition prior to its being removed, during the removal and finally, when ready to be shipped.
KEYWAY & WEAR PATTERN ANALYSIS:
We will not provide this service unless specifically requested by the client and will notify the client if we think this procedure should be performed, and will not do the process until permission is granted. We do utilize the type of microbore scopes that in most cases do not require full wear pattern analysis.
KEYS
SUBMITTED FOR ANALYSIS:
Keys submitted for wear pattern analysis and for comparison with other keys submitted must be photographed prior to shipping, and must be protected in a padded shipping envelope. We will also test the keys for active transponder systems. Many of the "rolling code" and "encrypted" transponder systems on some of today's vehicles can be defended on the merits of the systems alone, along with you're in depth SIU investigation.
LOCKS AND KEYS:
Our final analysis and conclusions will advise the client if anything other than the key with the correct mechanical key cuts was used in the keyway. Our technicians are also experts in lock bypass methods. Should you have any problems or request additional information, you may contact myself directly at my shop and fax number, 732-237-0209. you may also send us a "email" by visiting our web site at www.sterlingis.com.
Key comparison test
Please forward the lock with the key in the keyway or if already extracted, the extracted key to us along with the subject keys, and we will advise if the keys have the identical bittings and if a certain key was used as a pattern key to cut a copied key in a key duplicating procedure.
warning
Pack all keys separately, and do not allow them to touch.
